Ann Arbor-based Quantum Signal merges science and imagery, hiring 5 immediately

Quantum Signal, LLC uses high-end engineering mathematics and algorithms to extract information from visual data.

Huh?

Mitch Rohde, the company's chief operating officer, says that a common application for the company's algorithms would be in a face recognition program. Quantum is kicking it up a notch, and is developing multitudes of other programs and uses, like say, teaching advanced surveillance robots to "see."

Quantum also develops military training simulations and commercial video games, strange as that may sound. Rohde says there is overlap between the two. "We are working on both at the same time. It's a strange hybrid with lots of really cool projects."

The Ann Arbor-based company was founded in 1999 and has brought on board 20 employees, five of which were hired in the last year. Rohde is actively hiring five, including a game engine/simulation programmer, software engineers and programmers and a computer vision and robotics research engineer

Rohde says that being located near a university with a strong electrical engineering program is important. "This is a good environment for high tech," he says. "Overall, I like Michigan. It's a beautiful state with a relatively low cost of living."
