Work has begun on the Liberty retail expansion for the
McKinley Towne Centre
, a project that promises to bring a large chunk of downtown retail space back online.
Ann Arbor-based
McKinley
is renovating the old home to National City Bank on Liberty Street next to the
Michigan Theater
. The original plans called for razing the space and building a 2-story building in its place. Those plans were downsized last year.
"We're just renovating," says Royal Caswell, executive vice president of commercial real-estate for McKinley.
That renovation includes a new brick-and-stone façade. The 15,000 square feet McKinley is renovating doesn't have a tenant yet. The project is supposed to be done and ready for occupancy within four months.
