Work is moving forward on the proposed renovation and expansion of Eastern Michigan University Mark Jefferson Science Complex in Ypsilanti.
The university has hired Lord, Aeck & Sargent Architecture to design the structure and is currently looking at ways to make the building as environmentally friendly as possible. Named for the university's head of the geography department (1901-39), the $100 million project is expected to be finished in four years.
This is the largest construction project in school history. The plan calls for $26.7 million in renovations to the 180,802 square feet of the building built in 1969. Another $73.3 million will be used for a 151,000-square-foot expansion.
The sale of bonds will primarily fund the project. A 4-percent tuition and fee increase approved by the university’s Board of Regents for this project in the fall of 2005 will pay off most of the bonds.
