The Banks of Saline project maybe in a holding pattern for right now, but the development is preparing to take off later this year.
Developer Tom Foley recently received a $1 million from the state's Clean Michigan Initiative to clean up the old factory site the development will be built on. Foley will meet with officials from Johnson Controls, who used to own the land, later this month. Foley hopes to start construction later this fall and finish the project within three years.
"It's a pretty nice site," Foley says. "We're just waiting for some of our stuff to happen so we can move forward."
The development calls for building 102 condos in seven buildings overlooking the Huron River. Those buildings will range in size from two to three stories and will be marketed toward empty nesters and young professionals.
Each building will be built above an underground garage, so each unit will have access to an underground space and one more space outside. Residents will also have an option of purchasing an extra parking space if necessary.
The development is on 12 acres on Monroe Street near Saline's downtown district. The property served as an industrial area for Johnson Controls for years. It has been underused for 15-20 years and vacant for the last five years. Foley recently razed the old industrial buildings and expects to continue cleaning up the site later this year before construction starts.
