While Ypsilanti's Willow Run Airport may figure prominently into Metro Detroit's plans to create a globally-connected aerotropolis, it was originally built by Ford as an airfield for their B-24 Bomber plant --part of the region's history as the 'Arsenal For Democracy'.
After World War II, the airport became a major air freight hub with limited commuter service. But in 1981 a group of aviation buffs decided to preserve the airfield's all-but-forgotten history and the
Yankee Air Museum
was born.
Restoring and replicating vintage planes, hosting the wildly popular
Thunder Over Michigan
, putting on air shows around the coutry... this incredible group of dedicated volunteers has created a living museum to American aviation history.
