Mobiata adds 10 jobs, moves to bigger space in Ann Arbor's Nickels Arcade

Mobiata is turning last year's growth spurt into a growth streak this year, hiring 10 people in the last six months and moving into a larger space in downtown Ann Arbor.

The mobile app developer was acquired by Expedia last fall. Since then it has become Expedia's go-to app developer, prompting the start-up to expand its staff to 22 people and a combination of half a dozen independent contractors and interns. About a dozen of those are based in Ann Arbor.

Mobiata was one of the first app developers to emerge shortly after Apple opened its App Store. The company is famous for its travel apps like FlightTrack and a host of other travel apps. It launched Expedia's hotel app earlier this year and is working on more for release later this year. All of that work has created about 10 openings for app developers, software engineers and designers at the start-up.

"We have a lot more work slated for Expedia," says Jeremy Xavier, director of marketing for Mobiata. "We are now the app development arm for Expedia."

Mobiata is moving into bigger offices on the second floor of Nickels Arcade. The new 1,900-square-foot space is four times as large as its current location and will allow for the bulk of Mobiata's growth to take place in Ann Arbor. It will also offer a few extra amenities for the company's employees.

"It will have meeting areas and a ping-pong table," Xavier says.
