Work begins on Crisler Arena addition, renovation

Construction fences will go up and shovels will start to go into the ground this week for the new Player Development Center at Crisler Arena for the University of Michigan Men's Basketball team.

"It will start to look like work is happening on Thursday," says Steve Donoghue, design manager for the University of Michigan.

The new $23.5 million new practice facility will be an addition to Crisler Arena on its south side, replacing a surface parking lot. Work expected to take about 16-18 months to complete.

The building comes with a number of sustainable features, such as radiant heat in the floors, energy-efficient lighting systems, lots of insulation and the potential for a partial green roof.

"If the future held there would be some sort of green roof," Donoghue says.

Also in the works is an upcoming proposal to replace and upgrade Crisler’s infrastructure, such as plumbing, heating and cooling and electrical. "That phase is in design with not set timeline yet," Donoghue says.
