New Ann Arbor zoning, design guidelines to be discussed

As downtown Ann Arbor goes through its biggest transformation in decades, local leaders are looking for guidance on how those changes should be made.

The city's A2D2 committee has been developing zoning and design guidelines for the city's downtown for nearly two years. Among its recommendations is beefing up zoning for denser and more mixed-use developments, along with creating architectural guidelines that call for new buildings to blend in with their surroundings.

"It's making the new fit in with the old while still keeping its own character," says Wendy Rampson, system planner for Ann Arbor.

The city will hold two open houses on the proposed changes on May 1 at the Kerrytown Concert House, 415 North Fourth Ave. The first public meeting will be held between 3:30 and 5 p.m. and the second between 6:30 and 8 p.m.

City planners will give a short presentation on the proposed changes and allow residents to give their two cents on the subject.
