Growth Companies

For some twenty one is a milestone, a reason to celebrate. For Dexter Research Center, it's another banner year in what the company hopes will continue to be a long winning streak.

Developers of portable sensor systems, the Dexter-based technology firm has almost doubled sales in the last three years, from $5 million to $8 million, and is aiming to hit $10 million this year. That has grown Dexter Research to 80 people, adding nearly 30 jobs since 2005 and looking to bring on another five before the calendar year flips.

The company customizes applications of its thermopile technology, making it the preferred application in today's infrared detector market. That sounds well and fine in the industry but what are the plain-English applications?

Well, soldiers in combat on the front lines may soon be able to remotely detect a biological attack - and exactly what chemical to protect themselves against - with the help of a portable sensor system developed by Dexter Research. Similarly, detectors can be installed as part of a fire suppression unit on armored vehicles.

And Dexter Research intends to branch into private sector markets like the automobile industry.

More than two decades and still innovating. No wonder Dexter Research Center was named a 2008 Michigan Company To Watch.
